Alice Wood

I think it's so important to volunteer in Laramie. I came to Laramie because I was a college student, but I stayed because of the community. It is vital for everyone to get involved however they can, even if they are only here for four years or a short period of time. I love participating in the Laramie Big Event every year, and since I came from Civil Air Patrol in Gillette, WY I was very excited to continue the noble work in Laramie. Wyoming has a small population, but we have lots of mountains and many people get lost every year. Civil Air Patrol specializes in being Always Vigilant in our communities. I always encourage others to join. We fly multiple search and rescue missions in conjunction with the Wyoming National Guard every year. It's a special position that Civil Air Patrol has to be close with the Air Force and community. We are volunteers but we also have a higher call to participate in military missions specifically focused around Search and Rescue. The Laramie Civil Air Patrol is especially focused on helping cadets ages 12-18 become good citizens in the community. It is all about the next generation and how we can pass it on. I would say that’s the most important part: passing it on.

Civil Air Patrol, while not an active-duty military, is an Air Force Auxiliary volunteer organization. We fly search and rescue missions across the United States. It has been my honor to wear an Air Force uniform for the past ten years. Being a cadet in Civil Air Patrol (CAP) taught me leadership and aerospace. I still volunteer and work with Civil Air Patrol now that I have graduated college, because I am able to participate in active search and rescue missions, putting my Emergency Services experience and skills to good use. I understand the dignity, honor, and discipline of military drill as well as the ranks and grades for such. I have learned so much from CAP and I feel that it is my duty to give back to the community. Our core values are Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence, and Respect. I think my efforts to improve myself in these four areas help the community because it holds me to a higher standard. We also train our cadets to instill these values in themselves, which impacts our community's next generation. There is no greater feeling than helping young adults ages 12-18 achieve their goals and watching them grow and progress in the program. Civil Air Patrol saves lives, through Search and Rescue; and Civil Air Patrol changes lives, through our cadet programs mission. This chance to be a part of something greater than myself really compels me to keep up with Civil Air Patrol and keep training the next generation. Their efforts make a big impact.
